St. Patrick's Day Embroidery Designs: 30 Shamrock, Clover and Irish Ideas
Every year on March 17th we remember the patron saint of Ireland, Saint Patrick. These days St. Patrick's Day means lush spring green, a bit of mischief and a celebration of the Irish spirit. (And at Apex, the "Kiss Me, I'm Irish" is for real: my great-grandma was born in Mayo, Ireland.)
We have been building our St. Patrick's Day embroidery collection for over 20 years, and it now has more than 60 shamrock, clover, Celtic and leprechaun designs. Here are 30 of our favorites, grouped by style, with tips on what each one stitches best on.
Shamrock or Clover: What's the Difference?
All shamrocks are clovers, but not all clovers are shamrocks. A shamrock is a young three-leaf clover native to Ireland, with heart-shaped leaves, and it is the traditional symbol of St. Patrick and Irish culture. The four-leaf clover is a symbol of luck, which is why it shows up on so many "lucky" designs. Use a shamrock when you want something Irish and traditional, and a four-leaf clover when the theme is luck.
Classic Shamrock Embroidery Designs
- Infinity Shamrock Embroidery Designs: the shamrock with an infinity loop, a modern take for adult tees.
- Geometric Shamrock Embroidery Design: clean geometric lines that look great on hats.
- Pattern Four Leaf Clover Embroidery Design: a repeating clover pattern for pillow covers and tote bags.
- Good Luck Clover Embroidery Design: a simple lucky clover that fits small hoops.
- Happy St. Patrick's Day: a ready-made greeting for shirts and kitchen towels.
Sketch Shamrocks and Clovers (Fast to Stitch)
Sketch designs use light, open stitching that looks hand-drawn. They stitch quickly, stay soft on knits and are perfect when you need to make a stack of shirts for the whole family.
- Shamrock Sketch Pack Embroidery Design and Clover Sketch Pack Embroidery Design: packs of shamrocks and clovers in several sizes.
- Shamrock Leaf Sketch Embroidery Design and Clover Leaf Sketch Embroidery Design: single leaves, great on pockets and cuffs.
Tip: Light sketch stitching on t-shirts still needs a cutaway stabilizer. A mesh cutaway keeps it soft. See our embroidery stabilizer guide.
3D Puff Shamrocks
These designs stand out, literally. Stitched over craft foam, they rise off the fabric and look fantastic on caps and canvas bags. Start with 2 mm foam, then work up to 3 mm or even 4 mm. Stick to sturdy, non-stretch fabrics.

Applique Shamrocks and Plaid Clovers
Applique fills big areas with fabric instead of stitches, so large designs stitch fast and stay soft. Green gingham, tartan or glitter vinyl all look great for St. Patrick's Day.
- Clover Applique Pack Embroidery Design: clover shapes ready for your favorite fabric.
- Shamrock Circle Applique Embroidery Designs: a round shamrock patch shape that looks great on kids' tees.
- Irish Plaid Embroidery Designs Bundle: double your Irish flair with a touch of Scottish tartan.
- Shamrocks Wagon Applique Embroidery Design: a little wagon full of shamrocks.
If you haven't tried applique yet, our applique embroidery guide walks through every step.
Shamrock Monogram Frames and Fonts
A monogram turns a simple shamrock into a personal gift. Split frames leave space in the middle for a name or initials.
- Shamrock Frame Split Applique Embroidery Designs and Clover Split Embroidery Frame: add letters, a name or a monogram in the gap.
- Shamrock Frame Pack St Patricks day: several shamrock frames in one pack.
- Leprechaun Hat Monogram Embroidery Frame: a fun frame for a kid's name.
- Shamrock Embroidery Font St patrick's day: a whole alphabet with shamrock accents.
Celtic Knot and Irish Heritage Designs
Feeling traditional? The ancient Celts used endless knots, with lines that have no beginning or end, to symbolize the connection between people and the natural world. These designs suit gifts that need to last beyond March 17th.
- Trinity Knot and Irish Celtic Triskele Embroidery Design: classic Celtic symbols.
- Irish Celtic Faithful Heart Embroidery Design: a Celtic heart for anniversary or wedding gifts.
- Irish Claddagh Embroidery Design: the Irish symbol of love, loyalty and friendship.
- Irish Harp Embroidery Design: the national emblem of Ireland.
- Celtic Knots Embroidery Font: a decorative alphabet for Irish names.
Leprechauns and Fun Designs for Kids
- Rawr St. Patrick's Day Dinosaur Embroidery Design, St. Patrick's Day Unicorn Embroidery Design, St. Patrick's Day Sloth Embroidery Design and St. Patrick's Day Flamingo: playful designs kids will want to wear.
- Leprechaun Beard Embroidery Design and Leprechaun Hat Fill Embroidery Design: easy leprechaun icons.
- A Wee Bit Irish Embroidery Design: perfect for anyone who is only a little bit Irish.
- Irish Kisses Shamrock Wishes: a sweet saying for baby bodysuits and bibs.
In-the-Hoop St. Patrick's Day Projects
In-the-hoop (ITH) designs are finished completely in the embroidery hoop. These felties make quick party favors, bag charms and classroom treats.
Stitching Tips for St. Patrick's Day Projects
- Kelly green on white or gray is the classic look. On green shirts, stitch in white, gold or metallic thread so the design doesn't disappear.
- Metallic gold thread is great for pots of gold and lucky horseshoes. Slow your machine down and use a metallic needle.
- Matching family shirts: use one design in several sizes, from a 4x4 hoop for kids up to a larger hoop for adults.
- Stitch early. Shirts for school parades are usually needed the first week of March.
