3D puff embroidery, also called puff embroidery, puffy embroidery or 3D foam embroidery, stitches dense satin over a layer of foam so lettering and shapes stand up from the fabric. This Apex collection brings together 3D puff embroidery designs and 3D puff embroidery fonts: script alphabets, two-color monograms, block and varsity letters, Greek letters, fleur-de-lis, hearts and daisies. Browse the collection to compare sizes, color counts and included formats before you choose.
In puff embroidery, a layer of foam is placed over the design area on the fabric and covered with much denser satin stitching. Once the design has stitched, the excess foam is torn away, and the stitching stays raised over the foam that remains underneath.
Designs made for foam use much denser satin stitching, so they are not meant to be stitched without foam. Only designs digitized for foam work properly with it.
Use high-density foam made for embroidery. Embrilliance notes that home machines usually work with foam about 2 to 3 mm thick, and that craft foam tends to leave more stray bits behind after tearing. Check each product page for any notes from the digitizer before you buy.
The collection falls into a few groups, depending on whether you want lettering, a single motif or a themed set.
Monogram fonts raise initials off the fabric. Several of these list BX for Embrilliance users in their included formats.
Script bundles give you the same alphabet in several stitch styles. Cassiel includes four fonts in one bundle: regular satin stitch, 3D puff raised, chain stitch and bean running stitch, each in 1.75", 2.25" and 2.75" heights, with all letters A-Z in upper and lowercase plus the numbers 0-9. Molly follows the same four-style layout in the same three heights. Capella and Darlene list the four styles in 2.25", 2.75" and 3" heights. Cassie pairs regular satin stitch with 3D puff in two sets of five sizes from 1" to 3".
Block and varsity-style letters suit team, club and school projects.
Single motifs are a simple place to start. The Daisy Flower 3D Puff Bundle includes 3 designs, a 16-petal daisy at about 1" x 1" and 2" x 2" and two 6-petal daisies in four sizes each. The Fleur-de-lis 3D Puff Embroidery Designs Bundle collects 4 designs: a classic puffy fleur-de-lis, a smaller puff variation, a multicolor flag version and an American flag fleur-de-lis puff. The Football Heart Embroidery Designs Bundle rounds up 10 designs, including a Football Heart 3D Puff in two sizes.
Each font lists the heights it was digitized for, and the product pages suggest where each size fits. For example, the Greek Fun page lists the 1" height for subtle accents, structured headwear and pocket monograms, and the 2.5" height for oversized varsity apparel and gear bags. The Gentlemen page suggests its 2" height for cap crowns and compact chest monograms and its 5" height for jacket backs and stadium blankets. The Modern Block Shadow page points the 1.75" size at headwear and pocket accents and the 2.75" size at larger crests. Work from the size list on the page you are buying from, and test on scrap before the real item.
Puff embroidery is commonly stitched on caps and hats, and several puff fonts list small heights for cap crowns and pocket accents. Choose a fabric sturdy enough to carry the dense stitching, and keep in mind that puff suits items that will not face heavy washing or hot irons and dryers. The product pages also suggest sweatshirts, fleece, totes, gear bags and blankets for the larger sizes.
Regular embroidery stitches directly on the fabric, so the design lies flat. Puff embroidery stitches over foam, so the satin stitching stands up from the surface.
Yes. Puff designs are digitized for foam and are not meant to be stitched without it. Use high-density embroidery foam; craft foam tends to leave more stray bits after tearing.
Tear the excess foam away after stitching. For small bits that stick out, a hair dryer or heat gun held at a distance can melt them back. Keep it far enough away that the thread does not melt.
Hats are the most common use. Puff suits items that will not face heavy washing or hot irons and dryers, so think about how the item will be cared for before you choose it.
Check the included formats on each product page. Several puff fonts, including Suzanne, Alsace, the Greek fonts and Modern Block Shadow, list BX for Embrilliance users.
Each font lists the sizes it was digitized for on its product page. Check that list before you buy, and test on scrap fabric.
3D puff gives simple designs more presence. Start with a single motif or a short name in a puff font, test on scrap fabric, and move on to bigger projects once you are happy with the foam and stabilizer combination.
