Applique embroidery sews pieces of fabric onto a base fabric. The machine stitches a placement line, you lay the fabric over it, a tack-down stitch holds it, you trim the excess, and a satin border finishes the edge. This Apex collection includes applique embroidery designs, applique fonts and applique monograms for school spirit, sports, animals, fruit and more. Browse by theme to compare sizes, stitch counts and included formats.
Most applique designs stitch in the same order:
Some workflows fuse the applique fabric with iron-on backing. Embrilliance describes applique as more efficient than stitching a full background, because the fabric supplies the color and fill. Always use a stabilizer, since the stitches anchor to the stabilizer rather than to the fabric.
The designs in this collection can be grouped by theme and by how much space they need.
The Trojans School Spirit Sports Embroidery Design Bundle includes applique mascot designs for football, basketball and baseball game wear, such as Trojans with football and Trojans with letter applique designs, a letter with knockout, and arched and block lettering sized for sweatshirts from S to XXL in straight, curve-up and curve-down layouts. Matching vector PNG and SVG designs are sold separately. The Braves School Mascot Team Spirit Embroidery Design Bundle follows the same format, with a 2-piece football applique, a 1-piece letter applique and matching lettering.
Themed bundles give you several designs for one project.
The Ballet Dancing Shoes Embroidery Designs Bundle gathers 6 ballet-themed designs, including an applique pair at about 5" x 4.7". The Maple Leaf Embroidery Designs Bundle collects 10 designs, among them a maple leaf applique, a Canada maple leaf applique in several sizes and a maple leaf applique monogram frame sized for 1.5" and 2" fonts. The Basketball Embroidery Designs Bundle has 9 designs, from name frames to hoop and frame shapes, and its page lists Applique Embroidery and In the Hoop under technique.
These applique monogram fonts are digitized as complete letter sets. Each of them lists BX for Embrilliance users.
Two other fonts combine applique with other stitch types. The Varsity 3D Puff Outline Fill and Applique Embroidery Font offers an applique foundation set wrapped in a 3D foam satin outline. The Varsity Interlocking Font has a Large Applique Set in 6", 7" and 8" heights with applique placement lines, tack-down runs and a dense satin border.
Yes. Always use a stabilizer, because the stitches anchor to the stabilizer rather than to the fabric. Test your fabric choice on scrap first.
After the tack-down stitch, trim the excess fabric close to the stitching. Curved snips are a good tool for it.
Regular embroidery fills the whole shape with thread. Applique fills it with a piece of fabric and uses thread for the tack-down and the border.
Yes. Applique monogram fonts such as Vienna Bold, Alsace, Fishtail Oval and Suzanne Curlz are built for it, and each page lists the sizes included.
Check the included formats on each product page. If you use Embrilliance, look for BX on font listings.
Applique is a good way to stitch large shapes with strong color. Start with a bundle that includes simple shapes, practice the trimming step on scrap fabric, and build up to mascots and monograms.
